Biodegradable Glitter FAQ's

What is biodegradable glitter made from and how is it made?

Non-GMO eucalyptus trees which have been sustainably farmed in Europe, however, it still has the same reflective properties as conventional glitter.Cellulose is the substance that makes up most of a plant’s cell walls. Since it is made by all plants, it is probably the most abundant organic compound on Earth. Cellulose is a biodegradable polysaccharide. A polysaccharide is a type of carbohydrate.

The plant cellulose is dyed with cosmetic grade dyes and then covered with the tiniest amount of aluminium in order to give it it's shine. The cellulose is then fed through a glitter cutting machine and cut to the desired size and shape. We currently offer six different sizes all in Hexagonal shape. As our glitter is cosmetic grade our standard size grain of glitter is smaller than traditional craft glitter. Our Chunky glitter would be the equivalent size of craft glitter, we then stock super chunky and Ultra Chunky. More information regarding glitter sizing can be found here.

What are the ingredients of biodegradable glitter?

All of our glitter is biodegradable and made predominantly from a plant cellulose instead of PET plastic. The main ingredient is Eucalyptus Trees from sustainably farmed non-GMO plantations.

Rayon (Regenerated Cellulose), Glycerin, Aqua, Urea, Styrene/Acrylate Copolymer, [+/- Blue 1 Lake (CI 42090:2), Yellow 5 Lake (CI19140:1), Red 7 Lake (CI 15850:1), Black 2 (CI 77266), Titanium Dioxide (CI 77891), Ferric Ammonium Ferrocyanide (CI 77510), Aluminium (CI 77000)]

Does biodegradable glitter dissolve in water?

No, eco-glitter does not dissolve in water. Microorganisms are needed to digest eco-glitter and transform it into harmless substances; carbon dioxide, water and biomass. If eco-glitter did dissolve it would NOT be a good thing as it would still be there in the water, just you would not see it. Similar to salt dissolved in sea water, it is still there just you cannot see it, very easily demonstrated when sea water dries on skin, the salt is left behind and reappears.

Is biodegradable glitter edible?

Although non-toxic and non-harmful Bioglitter® is NOT a foodstuff and therefore not intended for consumption.

How long does biodegradable glitter take to biodegrade?

Eco-Glitter requires the presence of microorganisms to degrade. Warm and wet conditions are ideal and higher concentrations of microbes will increase the rate of biodegradation. A good analogy is that a leaf in an arid environment will take longer to degrade than in a swamp.

How does biodegradable glitter biodegrade?

If you leave your glitter in a warm, moist and oxygenated environment then it will begin to biodegrade, the rate depends on the mixture of these factors. Keep your EcoStardust in its pot or bag and it will last fine.

What is conventional glitter made from?

Plastic which can sometimes contain harsh chemicals which you don’t really want to be putting on your skin. Also if you wash this down the drain it may end up in the sea. Our glitter has been created to marine and wastewater safe standards and is vegan.

Has biodegradable glitter been tested on animals?

No, our biodegradable glitter is not tested on animals and is Vegan-friendly.

Where can I use EcoStardust glitter?

It is cosmetic grade so suitable for us on the face, body, nails and hair, however, it can also be used in craft projects if you wish.

Can biodegradable glitter be used on the eyes?

It is cosmetic grade glitter and has been approved safe for cosmetics by EC Regulation 1223/2009 and FDA Title 21 CFR. We recommend that customers use caution when using any glitters near their eyes. Although not specifically specified within any cosmetic regulations, the cosmetic industry applies a self-imposed limit of maximum 150 microns (.006 size) to cosmetic particles used around the eyes. Our Ultra Fine Glitter is .004 size and our Fine Glitter is .006 size.

How should I store my EcoStardust?

Eco-glitter is very stable and will not biodegrade on the shelf. Biodegradation will only be initiated in soil, compost or waste-water environments where microorganisms are present. Eco-glitter as supplied has an indefinite shelf life providing it is stored in a dry dark, cool environment, out of direct sunlight, away from direct heat sources and not exposed to microorganisms.

How do I apply my EcoStardust?

There are many ways to apply biodegradable glitter. Just pop something like beeswax, coconut oil, aloe vera gel, shea butter or un-petroleum jelly on wherever you want the glitter to stick and then dab the glitter on top. For a more long-lasting look we use eyelash glue ;) You will wake up the next day with ALL your look still in place if you do this.

Is EcoStardust as good as traditional glitter?

It is soo much better! It still has the same reflective properties as traditional glitter and is made with the same precision cutting techniques however it is good for the environment. This is premium grade cosmetic glitter and we find it actually feels very soft and is much more delicate on the skin.

No, not yet, it is being worked on but nothing is ready to be released yet. You also cannot get orange biodegradable glitter.

Biodegradable glitter is a more environmentally friendly alternative to current conventional glitter which is 100% plastic. The glitter that we sell is 92% plastic free.
