Happy World Vegan Day!

Happy World Vegan Day!

Happy World Vegan Day, Glitter Warriors!

As a vegan myself, I’m often asked: "why and how you go vegan"?!
People become vegan for many different reasons but the main reasons are usually for the benefit of animals, for the planet or for our health. For me it's a combination of all three. However recently the knowledge of the positive effect of a vegan lifestyle and diet on the environment has solidified my decision even more so.

The vegan charity Viva highlight some of the benefits of going vegan, which include saving wildlife, protecting our rainforests, preserving habitats, defending our oceans and halving your carbon footprint.

As well as abstaining from the consumption of animals and animal products, there are many other ways you can lead a vegan lifestyle and positively impact the environment.

According to Grand View Research, the Vegan Cosmetics industry is expected to reach $20.8 billion dollars by 2025 and a Neilsen poll showed that ‘not tested on animals’ was the most important packaging claim among those surveyed (57%). People are now just as concerned about what they’re putting onto their bodies as what they are putting in them.

Here are a few of my tips to live a more vegan-friendly lifestyle and some easy every day switches:

  • Cut out leather and opt for vegan friendly alternatives instead, most high street shops have alternatives and many are labelled vegan these days. Or instead of fake leather opt for organic cotton, hemp or another sustainable alternative fabric.
  • Look for the vegan stamp of approval on cosmetic and beauty products and always check that they're not tested on animals.
  • If you’re not wanting to go cold turkey straight away, cut out red meat. Beef requires 28 times more land to produce than pork or chicken, 11 times more water and results in five times more climate-warming emissions.
    • Try a milk alternative such as soya, oat, hemp, coconut or cashew. There are so many options available including strawberry, chocolate and banana milk also!

There is so much information out there about how easy making the switch is, from food to fashion and lifestyle it really is so simple to make the transition and something we should all be trying to do for the sake of the planet. Here are some links to my favourite vegan websites.
